This is the audio engineering and music production curriculum that trained hundreds of working engineers at The OC Recording School — written from twenty years behind the console, not from a lecture hall — now a self-paced online course: every chapter of the book, graded quizzes, a final exam, and a certificate of completion.

Straight From the Book

Every concept is drawn, labeled, and shown in the session — original figures and real Pro Tools screenshots, not stock art. Tap any figure to zoom.

A question from Chapter 1

Every chapter works like this — answer, check yourself, and see the reasoning. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.

  1. Who are the four main roles in the studio?

What You’ll Be Able to Do

Capture any source

Choose the right microphone and placement for vocals, drums, guitars, strings, and rooms — and know why it works.

Run the room

Acoustics, monitoring, and gain staging — build a space and a signal chain you can actually trust.

Master Pro Tools

From first launch to final bounce: sessions, recording, editing, comping, and the workflows working engineers use every day.

Mix with intent

EQ, compression, reverb, delay, and automation used for reasons you can name — not presets you can’t explain.

Finish records

Mastering, loudness targets, and delivery — plus the chapters most courses skip: post-production and live sound.

Handle the business

Contracts, royalties, splits, and licensing — the business chapter is written by a practicing entertainment attorney.

Questions, Answered

What exactly do I get?

The complete 22-chapter curriculum — the full text of the 858-page book — plus graded practice quizzes, the comprehensive final exam, a certificate of completion, and the companion downloads: the full multitrack practice session, three Pro Tools templates, and the impulse-response pack.

How long do I have access?

For life. One payment, no subscription. Sign back in anytime, on any device, with just your email.

Do I need Pro Tools?

Pro Tools is the reference DAW, taught from first launch onward. Every workflow chapter also includes an “Across the DAWs” sidebar translating the lesson to Logic Pro, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Studio One, and Reaper — and there’s a dedicated guide to completing every exercise in any DAW.

Do I need expensive gear?

No. A computer and a pair of headphones are enough to start. The book teaches you what gear does and when it matters — there’s a whole guide on how to buy gear so that when you do spend, you spend once.

What is the certificate?

Pass the final exam and you earn a certificate of completion from The OC Recording Company, signed by the author. It is a course credential, separate from the accredited in-person certificate program at The OC Recording School — if you want that, enroll at the school.

What is your refund policy?

Every enrolment is covered by a 14-day money-back guarantee. If the course isn’t for you, email info@theforumpress.com within 14 days of purchase and we’ll refund you in full — no questions asked. Refunded purchases lose course access, and any certificate issued under a refunded purchase is void.

Is there a print edition?

It’s in preparation. Join the list below and you’ll be first to know when it ships.
